Del Francis was originally born in the West Coast of Scotland and studied photography and production at Glasgow. He entered and won the prestigious HVCA International Photographic competition while still a final year student by submitting an environmental portrait which led to a scholarship via Bournemouth College of Art. He moved to London in the late 1980’s and learned his craft assisting renowned large format, studio photographer Phil Ward for a number of years before graduating onto personal commissions for many international publishing houses, design groups and Art projects. Additionally, Del has exhibited at multiple venues and galleries including the National Portrait Gallery.

Del is a portrait photographer who draws inspiration from ikonic imagery and classical artists to produce exceptionally striking and emotional photographs of people whether in studio or on location.

Constantly fascinated by the human condition; Del recently collaborated with clinicians at one of London’s largest teaching hospitals to produce a powerful and emotionally charged set of images called ‘Portraits to A Life of Dedication’.

When recently interviewed by MPB international and BBC Radio London about what continues to motivate him, Del gave the following explanation ‘Photography is what I do. It’s like oxygen. When I am not shooting, I’m planning the next shot or being intrigued by someone I’ve met or seen. It’s about the focus, idea and effort you put into a shoot that makes the difference. Technology has changed so much in today’s world, especially photography, but it’s striving to create an image that is hopefully timeless that gets me up and working every morning!’

We hope you enjoy the images
